Summary

The project will enable 350 students (aged 3 to 14) of a Primary and Nursery School in Tanzania to have lunch at school, without being forced to walk back home and then back school, even for 10 km, crossing bush areas inhabited by wild animals. It will be developed with the local Monastery, it aims both at: - dealing with the emergency situation, providing food and cooking facilities - building the conditions for the School to provide autonomously lunches by cultivating a Diocese's field.

Challenge

Kambya Nyoka School has not been providing the lunch to the students for the last years. The Primary students have therefore been forced to walk back home to have lunch and then walk back to school again in the afternoon. After walking for 24 to 32 km in a day they are so tired that it is very difficult for them to concentrate on the lessons and to learn. Even for the younger children who don't have lessons in the afternoon it is very hard to walk back home without having eaten anything.

Solution

in the short term: we'll provide healthy and nutritious food for the students' mid-morning snacks and lunches in the middle term, we'll progressively restore the capacity of the School to provide autonomously the lunches for the students, exploiting the agricultural land that the School has at its disposal.

Long-Term Impact

By providing school lunches to 350 students, we'll help them to improve: - their focus on study and school results and therefore their chances to complete the studies and get a qualified job - their health and safety, reducing the risk to meet wild animals walking back home twice a day - their families budget, reducing the cost of feeding the children. We'll also improve the local community economy, providing jobs to 2 cooks and 2-4 farmers
