Project: Preventive Initiative: Protecting Children from Risks
Location: Ghurdum Village, South Lalitpur
Focus: Breaking Cycles of Vulnerability
- The Human Face of the Mission: Buddha’s Story In Ghurdum, a village of 25 households, we work closely with families like Buddha’s. Buddha is a father of six daughters; his eldest has grown from a beneficiary into a valued volunteer for Console Mission. While Buddha is a helpful and hardworking man—often sharing the "happiness" of his green pea harvest with our team—his situation highlights the two primary risks we face:
- Traditional Mindsets: There is a lingering cultural pressure to have a son, which often leads to men seeking second wives, further destabilizing the family and putting daughters at higher risk of neglect or early marriage.
- Lack of Financial Security: Despite advice from our associates in early 2024, Buddha felt the $25 annual cost for livestock insurance was a "waste." When the floods of October 2024 hit, that decision became a tragedy, as his uninsured livestock was swept away, leaving the family with no safety net.
2. Strategic Interventions (Jan – April 2026)
Establishing a Foothold in Chaos
The 2025 floods revealed a systemic failure in local planning. Houses in Ghurdum were built unknowingly in natural water paths, and new construction (like local soccer grounds) disrupted the soil. This is the reality of a "third-world" landscape where administration is thin.
- The Response: Console Mission has rented a room to serve as "Our Study Place." Because our rented center only has one room, our staff and board members stay directly with local families. This immersive approach allows us to deliver Self-Protection sessions not just to children, but to parents in their own kitchens and fields.
Board Mobilisation (January & February)
- Field Immersion: In January, the new Board of Directors completed their first quarterly visit. They witnessed firsthand the lack of infrastructure and the "lifestyle" of migration.
- Empowering the Girl Child: Following our interactions with families like Buddha's, we have intensified our storytelling. We share examples of successful women and daughters to counter the narrative that a son is the only path to security.
3. Progress & Statistics
- Target Population: 81% Tribal and Ethnic communities.
- Direct Engagement: 25 Households in Ghurdum.
- Volunteer Growth: 1 former beneficiary (Buddha’s eldest daughter) now serving as a local leader.
- Physical Presence: 100% of the reporting period saw a consistent "Consoling" presence in the village.
4. Challenges: Sustainability vs. Tradition
Our biggest challenge is not just money; it is unlearning.
- The "Migration Goal": Many youths see education only as a bridge to a passport.
- Risk Management: We continue to advocate for livestock insurance and disaster-ready building practices, though poverty makes the $25 USD fee a significant barrier.
- Gender Vulnerability: We are actively monitoring households to prevent "social vulnerabilities" like child marriage or domestic servitude that often follow a family’s financial collapse after a disaster.
- Looking Ahead (May – August 2026)
- Scaling Hope: We are planning to reach 20 more villages, using the lessons learned from Buddha’s family in Ghurdum as a blueprint.
- The Study Place Expansion: Seeking ways to improve our community learning center so it can host overnight volunteers and more intensive training.
- Continued Advocacy: Pushing for "Local People’s Committees" to take an active role in inspecting new construction to prevent future flood damage.
A Message to You:"In Ghurdum, we are not just teaching children; we are staying in the homes of those we serve. We see the green peas they harvest and the buffaloes they lose. Your support allows Console Mission to be the 'physical presence' that prevents a family's tragedy from becoming a child's lost future. We are building a foundation, one village at a time."
