Since our fundraiser, illuminAid has continued its partnership with UNICEF Equatorial Guinea to help young people create and share practical HIV prevention messages through locally made videos. The project began with Video Education Workshops in Malabo and Bata, where youth participants learned to plan, film, edit, and screen short videos about HIV prevention, stigma, peer pressure, gender inequality, and mental health. These videos were designed to be accessible and relatable for young audiences, particularly those in communities with limited access to health education.
Following video screenings, Equatoguinean teens took the opportunity to ask questions and speak more openly about HIV prevention. This demonstrates a meaningful change in behavior and attitude toward HIV prevention. For many participants, the videos made a sensitive topic easier to discuss because the messages came from individuals who spoke their language, shared their concerns, and faced similar realities.
We are pleased to share that UNICEF has asked illuminAid to continue this work through an additional follow-up contract. Our Local Video Trainer in Equatorial Guinea is now facilitating more community screenings in both the insular and continental regions. These screenings extend the reach of the peer-produced videos and allow more adolescents to learn, reflect, and discuss ways to protect themselves and their communities.
This project continues to be a successful model of community-based video education. We are grateful to everyone who has helped make this work possible.
