Help us prevent stunting in Ghana by providing supplemental feeding for children in their first 1000 days of life. For just $10 per month, a child can receive a one-months supply of GrowNut lipid-based nutritional supplements to prevent stunting. Stunting is caused by an inadequate diet in the first 1000 days (from conception to two years old) and lead to irreversible damage to a child's brain and body. Daily lipid-based nutrition supplements can prevent stunting for just $10 per month!
Many children in sub-Saharan Africa are malnourished because they do not get adequate protein, vitamins, and nutrients in their diet. Children eat casava, sweet potatoes, and possibly other vegetables but the lack of protein and vitamins leads to serious consequences. More than 1 in every 5 children in Ghana are stunted and will not grow to their full potential. This can lead to an under developed brain and severe developmental delays.
FARE International will provide monthly nutritional supplements to children under two years of age in rural villages of Ghana, West Africa. The fortified peanut-based supplement contains the protein, vitamins, and minerals that babies need to grow and thrive. The project also aims to increase education around the risks of malnutrition in Ghana through health education seminars and recruitment of local women to support distribution of the supplements and growth tracking in each village.
We will educate women in each village about the risks of malnutrition, including the need for a nutritious diet for mothers during pregnancy. The villages where we work will also be provided with wells for clean drinking water, which is vital to prevention of malnutrition. The long-term effects of the project will include children who grow to their full potential without developmental delays or stunting, and empowerment of women to promote health in their communities.
