By Usha Bhaskar | Senior Manager
Continuing the success of Learning on Wheels (Mobile Computer Lab) at Hyderabad, the Foundation is implementing the same initiative at Chennai and Bangalore as well. Currently three Mobile Computer labs are operating at Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. This initiative had provided the opportunity to underserved children from slum areas/ city outskirts to learn digital literacy skills in a 21st Century atmosphere. More than 700 children are impacted in these three cities and are empowered with technology skills, these children are very confident to compete with any elite private school students in digital literacy skills.
In order to develop young programmers and coders, the foundation introduced “Computational Thinking” initiative in the previous year. As the part of this initiative the students are trained on drag and drop programming with the help of online resources, animations andinteractive games. More than 5000 students from project nodal schools are trained on basic drag and drop programming and 2000+ students completed the advanced level certificate. Students who completed the advanced level are now developing educational applications, games and puzzles with the help of online templates. Continuing the success the students are now learning real programming. They feel real programming easier as they have learnt drag and drop programming which is helping them to write the program.
Inorder to transform the classroom more vibrant and colorful the foundation initiated “Classroom Makeover” initiative in all the project schools across India. As the part of this cause each school is provided with innovative teaching aids like “Mobeles, Timelines, Charts, Bulletin Boards, Interactive Bulletin Boards and paintings on various Science, Math topics”. These teaching aids not only making classrooms more vibrant but also helping in retention of strength in each class. The students are happy to see 3D teaching aids making the learning more concrete and effective.

Activities Taken-up in the last Quarter :
The Children of migrant labours had an opportunity to have fun learning during the summer holidays. In spite of hot summer these children were very eager to work with notebooks, pen, paper and even technology. More than 100+ students participated in the summer sessions. Initially they were slightly hesitant to attend but later days they were not willing to miss the sessions as it had more activities and fun filled learning. The children were oriented based on activities they come across in day to day life. The most interest activity was on animals and birds they see every day. They felt very sad knowing on the fact of the effects on animals and birds due to human behavior, deforestation, pollution etc. The kids portrayed their thoughts through simple paintings on conserving the nature.
The activities to these children were given based on their skill set after analyzing the same. The identified children shared their skills to others by training their peers with their skill set. Best example was one of the kids training others on origami (paper folding) and others joined together and made the models of animals and birds too. The technology intervention played a vital role during these sessions. The children were very adaptive to learn the basics and used it as a tool to display their learning’s.
The minority children from various part of the country gather to learn Arabic language through Madarsa’s during summer. These students were surprised on getting an opportunity to learn technology. Since these students never had an access to computers ever before and also since they cannot read, write, speak or understand English, learning computers was a humungous task for them. They found it very interesting as it was activity based learning’s using technology as a tool. The children shared the happenings around their community, the problems they face every day. The healthy discussion resulted with lots of solutions to over go the issues in their community. The children finally returned back with lots of learning’s and assured to join next summer too.
