Boya and Dr. Fofie with the supplies.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We wanted to share pictures of the delivery of the first set of supplies to the cervical cancer program with you! Project Heal, the student run organization at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that conducts annual service trips to Ghana, delivered the supplies to Dr. Fofie at the Wa District Hospital this summer after hand carrying each piece in their suitcases. The supplies delivered included:

  • 1 diathermy machine with smoke evacuator
  • 1 cryotherapy set
  • 8 tenaculums
  • 2 biopsy forceps
  • 3 Petterson and 2 Graves Speculums
  • 25 recovered Graves speculums and 5 Petterson speculums

Attached are pictures of the then President of Project Heal, Boya Wang, with Dr. Fofie when Project Heal delivered the supplies. We hope to have an update from Dr. Fofie soon on his progress on the first trainings of the nurses who will be conducting the cervical cancer screenings and will keep you all updated.

Thank you for your dedicated support that enabled the purchase of the these supplies and the establishment of the first cervical cancer screening and treatment program in the Upper West Region of Ghana. As always we are open to comments, questions, or suggestions and you can reach me directly at director@medplusconnect.org.

Thank you,

Anna

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We are so excited to share that the first set of supplies and equipment, purchased entirely through your generous donations, were delivered last week to Dr. Fofie at the Wa Regional Hospital! Included in this delivery were:

  • 1 diathermy machine with smoke evacuator
  • 1 cryotherapy set
  • 8 tenaculums
  • 2 biopsy forceps
  • 3 Petterson and 2 Graves Speculums donated by Buckeye Medical Supply
  • 25 recovered Graves speculums and 5 Petterson speculums

These supplies were hand carried by Project Heal, a student run organization at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on their annual summer service trip to Ghana at the beginning of this month. MedPLUS Connect has a long-term partnership with Project Heal and the group was actually founded by two of the founders of MedPLUS Connect while they were students at UNC. We are so grateful that the members of Project Heal volunteered their time and space in their luggage to carry these supplies! By doing so, they also saved us the cost of shipping these supplies to Wa, which enabled us to purchase the smoke evacuator to accompany the diathermy machine. This piece of equipment is a necessary accessory piece for the diathermy machine that will allow Dr. Fofie to work continuously without having to wait for the smoke generated by the diathermy procedure to dissipate.

The Project Heal members were able to meet with Dr. Fofie in Wa to transfer the supplies and upon receiving them he wrote to us that he was "highly pleased with the supplies" and will be "kick starting" the program soon now that he has them! We hope to receive some pictures from Dr. Fofie and Project Heal within the next month and will share those with you and keep you updated on the start up of the program. Thanks to the support of YOU, the first cervical cancer screening and treatment program for the Upper West Region is becoming a reality!

We also wanted to let you know that Global Giving is having their second bonus day of the year on Wednesday, June 15th and the exciting news is that is the GG Rewards Bonus Day! That means that as a "Leader," any donations made to the cervical cancer program through GlobalGiving.org on June 15th will be matched at 40% instead of the usual 30%! That means a donation of $100 would yield $140 for the additional supplies needed to extend the reach of the cervical cancer screening and treatment program to all of the Upper West Region! See more about the program and past reports here: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/prevent-cancer-for-women-in-ghana/

Thank you for your support, we are sincerely grateful. As always we are open to comments, questions, or suggestions and you can reach me directly at director@medplusconnect.org.

Thank you,

Anna

Dear Friends and Supporters,

On our last update, we shared that Dr. Fofie is officially recovered and back practicing at the Wa Regional Hospital. We are now excited to report that we are currently working with Dr. Fofie to arrange the first shipment of supplies and equipment for the cervical cancer program! We are in the process of negotiating shipping costs and are excited to move forward with the establishment of the program!

In this shipment we will be able to include 25 standard Graves speculums and 5 Petterson speculums that were donated to the program as well as a combination of biopsy forceps, tenaculums and sponge forceps. We also expect that we will be able to send a diathermy machine, cryotherapy set with the accompanying cylinder and are very hopeful that we will also be able to include an autoclave!

We also wanted to let you know that the first GlobalGiving Bonus Day of the year is fast approaching! GlobalGiving will have $75,000 available in matching funds to match all donations made on Wednesday, March 16th, from 9am EDT until midnight! All online donations are eligible to be matched at a pro-rated percent- a percentage that will be determined at the end of the Bonus Day. This is an ideal time to donate as you're donation will be matched by GlobalGiving to make an even larger impact! We're excited to see what the percentage will be!

Thank you all for your continued support of this important and much needed program! As always we are open to comments, questions, or suggestions and you can reach me directly at director@medplusconnect.org.

Thank you,

Anna

Dear Friends and Supporters

We are so happy to share that Dr. Fofie is now officially back in Wa! After several delays and a long recovery, he has resumed working at the Wa Regional Hospital and is very eager to advance the cervical cancer project. We expect that our next report will be filled with exciting updates on the progress of the program!

We also want to thank those who donated to our cause during this week's #GivingTuesday! You were a part of a worldwide philanthropic movement and by doing so, you've contributed greatly to the health and wellbeing of women in the Upper West Region of Ghana. For that, we sincerely thank you.

Now that we're in the holiday season, we also wanted to remind you that making a donation in honor of a loved one can be the perfect gift! When you sign up for a new monthly recurring donation between now and December 31st, a generous anonymous donor will match your initial gift 100%! Giving the gift of cervical cancer screening and prevention for women in Ghana is a meaningful and impactful gift and a recurring donation can keep giving throughout the year. Just $12 will purchase a speculum needed for early screenings. You can visit our project page here to see more.

Thank you all for your continued support of this important and much needed program! As always we are open to comments, questions, or suggestions and you can reach me directly at director@medplusconnect.org. We wish you all a happy holiday season and best wishes for the new year!

Thank you,

Anna

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We hope you're enjpying the long holiday weekend! Our last update mentioned that Dr. Fofie was recovered enough to return to the cervical cancer project. We have talked with him recently and are excited that he is on his way back to Wa! We look forward to having him able to continue his passion in establishing the first cervical cancer screening and treatment program in the Upper West Region. We also heard back from Project Heal, the student service group that visited Ghana this summer. They unfortunately weren’t able to visit Wa during their travels this year but we will remain in close touch with the group and hope there will be even more opportunities for them to assist with the cervical cancer program next summer.

You may have also noticed some exciting changes to GlobalGiving recently. At the end of July, GlobalGiving unveiled their new website, which included many improvements to give you faster load times and easier navigation. They are continuing to make additional improvements that you may notice in the coming months, but we hope the new site makes it easier for you to keep track of the cervical cancer project!

Also, directly due to your continued support, our Partner Rewards Level has moved from "Partner" to "Leader!" This means MedPLUS Connect is now more likely to be recommended to a corporate partner, featured in GlobalGiving social media and donor communications, eligible for special trainings, matching campaigns, and other opportunities just for Leaders and able to post microprojects. This means more opportunities to support and extend the reach of the cervical cancer program!

Thank you all for your continued support of this important and much needed program! As always we are open to comments, questions, or suggestions and you can reach me directly at director@medplusconnect.org.

Thank you,

Anna
