AGE Africa is on a mission to change the trajectory of academically promising girls with a demonstrated financial need. We firmly believe that education is a profound need and aspiration of life. To fulfill this, we have launched a project aiming to provide access to this fundamental right for ten of these girls who are set to graduate in 2027. With your generous support, we can help these girls unlock their potential and remove the obstacles standing between them and their dreams.
Combined with systemic poverty, the state of girls' education is dire in Malawi. Girls are under-enrolled in school 2:1 compared to boys nationwide, and in many rural areas almost 6:1. Only 6% of girls will go on to graduate high school. Only 2.9% of girls will go on to complete post secondary education. Malawi has one of the highest child marriage rates in the world, with one in two girls being married before the age of 18.
AGE Africa's scholarships not only assist girls with paying school fees but also with: the cost of uniforms, school supplies, transportation, and personal hygiene materials such as sanitary pads. Our scholarships aim to ensure that the most vulnerable girls stay in school and succeed. Over 90% of AGE Africa scholars complete secondary school over 90% delay marriage and pregnancy until after their 18th birthday
A single year of education has been estimated to increase individual earnings by 10%, and that figure is up to 15% among women in Africa. According to the Population Council, universal secondary education among young adults aged 15-24 years in countries like Malawi could boost annual gross national income (GNI) by $8.1 trillion, which represents an estimated 11.5% growth.
