In March this year (2024), Cyclone Filipo caused severe damage to a Community Preschool where 70 local three to five year-olds enjoy "learn through play" lessons every day. The storm caused damage to the two classrooms, the store room and the playground. The school depends on support from the nearby Bahia Mar Resort and its guests. With a little help from our friends, we can urgently make lasting repairs to return this preschool a safe and comfortable place for the little ones to thrive.
Heavy winds and rain from Filipo broke the timber that supports shade above the playground and ruined the cement floors in the classrooms. Although the school remains open, the physical conditions are poor.
Our hope is to repair all of the broken infrastructure at the school with climate smart repairs, including upgrading the playground equipment, to make it a safe space to learn and play for a long time to come. And thanks to some offline donations, we were able to bring down the total needed to get it done!
Through the generous spirit of Bahia Mar Hotel and it's guests, the community preschool has provided early childhood development for hundreds of children. It's a game changer for 3 to 6 years who get this opportunity before starting primary school. The benefits of early childhood development are proven to last long into adulthood in areas such as education, health and income. It's one of the greatest tools for ending the cycle of poverty.
