Bahia Mar's Bonguile project sustains the Quinto Congresso Community Preschool, primarily through donations from guests. "Bonguile" means "gratitude" in the local language. Enrolled children get HUGE early childhood development benefits. The school uses a "learn-through-play" care and teaching approach and serve porridge daily to 60 children (three to five years old) in the Quinto Congresso neighborhood. Because of your generosity, all children can attend, regardless of their economic situation.
The Mozambican government provides education starting in primary school at six years old. Most children under six stay home where they are only exposed the local language. Often they are not well supervised while their parents leave to earn income. Children lacking socialization, preliteracy and maths, and exposure to the Portuguese language start primary school "behind," often experience the start of primary school as a shock they never fully recover from.
Bahia Mar established the Bonguile project in 2013 to ensure early childhood development for children in the Quinto Congresso neighborhood. As many as 60 children attend, regardless of their ability to pay monthly fees. By sustaining the school, the project ensure that all area children children receive "learn-through-play" lessons, porridge, socialization and physical development in the beautiful classrooms and playground. Just $50 per child per year completes the school's operating budget.
The Bonguile project provides children with the "early childhood development difference." This is the proven phenomenon that those who attended preschool achieve better later-in-life outcomes around educational attainment, income and health. Evidence can be found in UN studies (https://www.unicef.org/early-childhood-development). When accounting for "early exposure to the national language," the children served by Bonguile really are getting a HUGE boost in life. AND YOU MAKE IT POSSIBLE!
