For Peace in the Tarahumara Region

By Fundación San Ignacio de Loyola, México

The Rarámuri people are involved in peacebuilding

The Rarámuri people are resisting the various forms of violence and discrimination that have affected their way of life. Engaging the community in affirming its identity and exercising its rights, whilst fully respecting its own customs, is a way of addressing the weakening of the social fabric within the community and among families, which contributes to peace-building at local and regional levels.

Issues identified in connection with violence.

In the Sierra Tarahumara region of Chihuahua, Mexico, some of the issues identified in connection with violence relate to mental health problems caused by substance misuse among adolescents, young people and adults; suicide among adolescents and young people; and cases of sexual abuse during childhood and adolescence.

Initiatives aimed at peacebuilding.

The Rarámuri identity is deeply rooted in nature and the use of the native language as a tool for expression and active listening. This has been used to strengthen the participation of each community involved in the revival of their festivals, rituals and traditional music, through social intervention models tailored to their circumstances and capabilities, and with the support of community leaders.

The inclusion of vulnerable adolescents, young people and families (Mestizos, Rarámuri, Rarómai and Odame) in traditional community activities within schools and parishes in the communities of Cerocahui, Baborigame, Guachochi and Samachique, in the Sierra Tarahumara, has resulted in the development of skills within local teams through training and ongoing support, strengthening their capacity to implement actions aimed at rebuilding the social fabric, providing mental health care and preventing psychosocial risks.

Since 2024, we have been implementing comprehensive actions aimed at building peace in the region. In addition, protective factors and healthy family bonds were promoted through workshops, preventive activities and family counselling, benefiting 866 adolescents and young people and 210 family members. With your donation, we will be able to continue these initiatives within the communities and benefit more children and adolescents in 2026.
