In North and South Kivu, refugee families are highly exposed to Ebola due to a lack of hygiene supplies, delayed access to information, and limited access to early healthcare services. This project will strengthen refugee resilience by distributing Ebola prevention kits, promoting safe home-based care practices, and facilitating rapid referrals to health services to help reduce disease transmission during outbreaks.
In Kivu, refugee communities are often overcrowded and frequently lack soap, cleaning supplies, and clear prevention guidance. Fear, stigma, and limited access to healthcare services delay treatment for sick individuals. Without protective measures within households and timely referral to specialists, Ebola can spread more easily through caregiving and close contact, increasing risks for children, pregnant women, and vulnerable patients.
This project will reduce the risk of Ebola transmission by providing refugee families with hygiene and prevention kits containing essential household supplies for safer daily practices. Community volunteers will be trained to share practical messages on safe caregiving and disease prevention. The project will also facilitate early detection and referral of families so they can access Ebola treatment and healthcare services more quickly during outbreaks.
In the long term, improved hygiene practices, greater prevention awareness, and better access to early healthcare will help reduce Ebola transmission within refugee communities in Kivu. Families will be better prepared for future outbreaks, with fewer preventable infections and faster access to appropriate care, protecting children and other at-risk groups while strengthening overall refugee resilience.
