Pangolin Cup 2026 - Campaign Progress

Pangolin Cup 2026 – Campaign Progress The project team has initiated preparatory activities for the Pangolin Cup 2026 and made steady progress across key areas of planning, outreach, and coordination. In the initial phase, the team reached out to local apex bodies in Ukhrul and Tamenglong districts to seek their support and collaboration for hosting the tournament. Both districts have responded positively, expressing strong interest in hosting the Pangolin Cup in their respective villages. This early engagement reflects growing community ownership and support for the initiative, which is central to promoting pangolin conservation through sports. Simultaneously, groundwork for the event has begun. The team is currently developing sensitisation and outreach materials to be used during the tournament. This includes the design of awareness materials focused on pangolin conservation, as well as event-specific items such as the winners’ trophy, medals, and other felicitation materials. Efforts are being made to ensure that these materials are both visually appealing and aligned with the conservation message of the campaign. Looking ahead, the team will focus on strengthening the visibility and outreach of the Pangolin Cup 2026. This will involve identifying and engaging key influencers from across Northeast India, particularly individuals associated with football and wildlife conservation, to support and promote the campaign. In parallel, logistical planning will be advanced, including finalisation of the venue in consultation with local stakeholders, preparation of the guest list, and development of a detailed event plan. Overall, the Pangolin Cup 2026 is progressing as planned, with strong initial community engagement and ongoing efforts to integrate conservation awareness with a popular sporting platform. The upcoming phase will prioritise outreach, partnerships, and detailed event planning to ensure effective execution and impact.

Handover of the cheque and scroll of honor.

Greetings from Wildlife Trust of India!

During the second wave of Covid 19 in India, WTI received over 300 requests to support the families of India's frontline forest staff who succumbed to the pandemic, while serving their country and protecting its wildlife.

The support was a part of a unique 'Supplementary Accident Assurance Scheme' run by WTI, through which we provide immediate financial aid - around 1,260 USD in case of death or a lesser amount in case of injury on duty - to the frontline forest staff of India.

The pandemic claimed more lives than anyone expected and we were shocked and saddened to receive so many requests together!

We had raised this appeal seeking support for the cause for which you so generously donated. Thank you for your donation. We would like to compliment you by saying that you have a heart of gold!

We are very glad to let you know that we have provided support to all the requests we received in the prescribed format. Sharing a couple of images of all the cheque and 'scoll of honor' handovers.

Thankfully, the Covid 19 pandemic is not as lethal as before and we have stopped receiving requests for Covid-related casualties. This is why we have decided to deactivate this appeal.

Once again thank you for standing by India's forest guards, their families and WTI in our time of need.

Nevertheless, we continue to support the frontline forest staff, specially the daily wagers who are often bereft of any benefits! They are still risking their lives in their line of duty as they often fall victim to attacks by poachers, natural calamities such as forest fires and also wild animals. Apart from this, these unsung heroes often lack the necessary equipment and field gear to operate, which we supplement.

Honoring lifetimes committed to conservation

Greetings from Wildlife Trust of India!

Hope you are well.

We are glad to share the updates for our project ‘Covid Support to Families of Conservation Warriors’, which you so generously chose to donate for. Thank you so much for supporting our work.

In the reporting period, we sanctioned an ex-gratia of INR one lakh each and a scroll of honour to the families of two of the forest department staff who succumbed to Covid-19.

Mr. Binom K* was serving as a Range Forest Officer in the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh since 1987. Binom loved his job and had built a great rapport with the locals and his colleagues in the forest department. His efforts involving local communities in conservation activities helped popularise Mishmi Hills as a go-to birding destination for tourists. The dedicated officer was an inspiration for his juniors. On 14^th May, 2021, Binom unfortunately passed away due to COVID-19 leaving behind his wife and three children.

Mr. Maino D* was working as an Anti-poaching camp attendant in the Tale Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh. Maino joined the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department in 1993 and was serving at the Hapoli forest division for the last five years. He was sincere, dependable and exemplified diligence at workplace. Even in the worst of monsoons, Maino ensured adequate supplies and optimum working conditions for the anti-poaching camp staff. He had a charming personality that won the hearts of all those who knew him or worked with him. Maino, sadly left us on 15^th May, 2021 leaving behind his wife and two young children.

Losing such incredible people who had dedicated their lifetimes to protecting our country’s natural heritage is a blow to the conservation sector. While nothing can compensate the loss of a life, this is the least we can do.

With the pandemic gradually ebbing away, we hope for a brighter tomorrow for all. Thank you so much for standing in support of the conservation warriors and with WTI in the most difficult of times.
