Fruit trees support nutrition & income for Guatemalan children & families

By Lizzy Rainey | Development Manager

Dear friends,

Our commitment to the communities along the Río Dulce remains strong. We are happy to report that our partners at Casa Guatemala continue to care for the orchards planted over the years, providing students with a beautiful campus and a steady supply of fresh food.

The Fruits of Labor
In the surrounding villages along the river, the household trees we have planted are now maturing. Families are beginning to see the literal fruits of their labor, as these trees provide both immediate nutrition and an avenue for household income.

The Urgent Need
Guatemala faces one of the highest rates of chronic malnutrition in the world, with nearly half of all children under five affected by stunting. In rural regions like the Río Dulce, where poverty is concentrated and food costs are rising, access to vitamins and minerals is often a luxury. Recent data shows that over 3 million Guatemalans are currently facing food insecurity, making local, self-sustaining food sources more critical than ever.

How You Can Help
By helping us plant more food-producing trees, you are providing families with a safety net that works on multiple levels:

  • Nutrition: Bridging the gap in diets that are often lacking in fresh vitamins.
  • Income: Allowing families to sell surplus fruit to support their livelihoods.
  • Environment: Stabilizing soils along the river to protect the local ecosystem.

As we assess the continued need in this region, we ask that you consider a donation today. Your support ensures that more families along the Río Dulce can transition from food insecurity to long-term abundance.

With gratitude,

The FTPF Team
