Plant-Based Meals for 400 School Children in Uganda

By Ashley Capps | Project Leader

Partner Spotlight: Magic Marble Foundation

Magic Marble Foundation (MMF) is a nonprofit that "works to alleviate the suffering of underprivileged human and non-human animal populations by providing planet-friendly support including food, housing, medical treatment, education, and the financial assistance required to procure these basic needs." Through them, and with your generous support, we sponsor plant-based meal programs for children in need in Nepal and Uganda.

In Uganda, MMF currently provides nourishing plant-based meals to 400 children at Kasikombe and Nampewo Primary Schools, situated roughly 70 miles west of Kampala in Uganda. The meals include kidney beans, mixed greens and posha (a steamed bread made from corn flour). In 2023, we helped MMF provide more than 80,000 meals to the children in both schools, and our support in 2024 is ongoing. Here's what our partners have to say about the school meal program:

"Our vegan meal programs are making a significant impact in the communities surrounding Kasikombe and Nampewo Primary Schools. These programs ensure that children arrive at school without the burden of hunger and are equipped with the vital nutrition they need to thrive academically and physically.

Daily Meals for School Children

Many children in these areas face the challenge of attending school on an empty stomach, which can severely hinder their ability to concentrate, learn, and participate in school activities. Our program provides daily vegan meals that are rich in essential nutrients, ensuring that every child has the energy and focus needed to succeed in their studies. By offering these meals, we help to improve school attendance and performance, giving children a better chance for a brighter future.

Nutritional Benefits

Vegan meals offer a range of health benefits that are especially important for growing children. Our meals are carefully planned to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, providing a balanced diet that supports healthy growth and development. These plant-based meals are high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which are crucial for children's physical and cognitive development.

Community Impact

The benefits of our vegan meal programs extend beyond the school walls. By ensuring that children receive adequate nutrition, we contribute to the overall health and well-being of the community. Healthier children are less likely to suffer from illnesses, which means fewer missed school days and less strain on local healthcare resources. Additionally, providing these meals helps to alleviate the financial burden on families struggling to provide enough food, allowing them to focus on other essential needs.

Environmental Sustainability

Our vegan meal programs also promote environmental sustainability. Plant-based diets require fewer resources and generate less environmental impact compared to diets that include animal products. By serving vegan meals, we are not only nourishing children but also teaching them about sustainable living practices that benefit the planet."

The Plant-Based School Meal programs we support depend on the generosity of our donors. Your contributions can help us continue to provide these essential meals to children in Kasikombe and Nampewo, ensuring that they have the nourishment they need to succeed in school and beyond. By supporting our programs, you are making a direct and meaningful impact on the lives of children and their communities.
