Our mission is to strengthen plant-based feeding and farming solutions for people and communities experiencing hunger and poverty in the U.S. and globally, while championing a shift away from the production of animal-sourced foods as part of any viable strategy to improve global food security and mitigate the climate crisis. Working through our Plants-4-Hunger and Global Grants programs, we financially strengthen and partner with highly effective, on-the-ground initiatives providing immediate plant-based food and farming assistance for people in their own communities. Plant-based foods feed far more people using far fewer resources (land, water, and energy), and producing drastically fewer emissions. Some 80% of all agricultural land is used for livestock production, making it the number one driver of deforestation and biodiversity loss globally. One gram of protein from beef or lamb requires nearly 100 times more land than a gram of protein from peas or tofu. Currently less than half the world's cereal grains are consumed by humans. 41% is fed to livestock, who convert only a fraction of these calories into calories humans can eat. For every 100 calories of grain or other crops fed to a cow, only 2 calories of beef or 24 calories of dairy are produced. The United Nations estimates that the calories lost by feeding cereals to animals, instead of using them directly as human food, could feed an extra 3.5 billion people. Our Plants-4-Hunger program provides 100% plant-based food relief to communities experiencing food insecurity around the globe. Working through local partners in each of the regions we serve, Plants-4-Hunger supports culturally appropriate school meals for children in need; food tree and food forest plantings; community vegetable gardens and seed sharing; soy microbusinesses to empower women; and disaster relief food aid to communities experiencing hunger as a result of war, pandemics, and weather catastrophes. We combine this direct local empowerment with institutional alliances to further our shared mission in ways that address root causes and create structural change. Additionally, our research analyses and campaigns provide nuance to complex issues related to the consumption and production of animal-sourced foods. In particular, we raise awareness on the ways in which the livestock sector is a major driver of resource depletion, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emissions resulting in increased global food insecurity and climate destruction. Our practical, multi-level approach provides tools for meaningful change so that individuals, NGOs, governments, and institutions embrace the benefits of plant-based foods and farming.
