This project will plant and protect 10,000 trees in San Luis Potosi City, Mexico, in order to restore, enhance and protect the tree canopy of the city. Proforestal, A.C. is a non-profit organization leading the effort to build healthy, livable communities in San Luis Potosi region.
San Luis Potosi City is rich in natural beauty. Many neighborhoods are almost completely covered in asphalt and concrete and sorely lacking trees and nature. On hot days, scorching surfaces bake in the heat, endangering people's health. Our streams and rivers are paved over, so that when it rains, water can't soak into the ground where it could add to our aquifers. Instead, it gets evaporated, sweeping trash and pollution onto our streets.
Proforestal, A.C. will bring nature back to the city streets and neighborhoods, and let nature do its job, by planting and caring for trees, restoring healthy soil, conserving water, and harvesting the rain. Families: dads, moms, boys and girls, will be taught to take care and create a protective canopy over urban San Luis Potosi City to come together for a healthier and more viable future.
By planting 10,000 trees: they will reduce the build-up of heat from exposed asphalt and buildings, and decrease energy demand; they will slow the runoff of rainwater and absorb it into the ground, prevent pollution and soil erosion, and are key to a clean and ample water supply; they will make the air breathable, streets walkable, and schoolyards playable; they will provide a healthy tree canopy that protects us in a changing climate. Trees will truly make San Luis Potosi a more livable City
