Through this project, the Rwandan Youth Development and Voluntary Organization (RWAYDAVO) will plant and maintain 40,000 trees in the Northern Rwandan region, and enable environmental protection as well as economic support of the local Rwandan community in 5 rural sectors of Cyinzuzi, Burega, Kiyanza, Mugambazi, and Ntarabana. Your donation will go towards RWAYDAVO's planting and maintaining of 40,000 Trees.
Continuous deforestation is happening in Rwanda because of the need for food, medicine, charcoal, and timber. The loss of tree cover in a rainy, mountainous country has had severe environmental consequences. In addition to tremendous loss of biodiversity, the region experiences soil degradation, erosion, and landslides.
The project will plant trees with young children in 5 rural villages. Several varieties of trees suitable for equatorial climate will be planted. Local community leaders and school heads will be made aware of the benefits of tree planting and environment. By providing environmental skills and knowledge to rural school children, the children will be empowered to protect their local environment. The community will benefit from income generation from the fruits.
Because of the awareness created by this project, the children and the community will learn to nurture the trees, and not cut them down. The knowledge of planting and protecting the trees will be passed on to the next generations. If this project succeeds, we will identify additional sectors in which trees can be planted, and spread our good work.
