I’m writing to give you an update on the situation in Haiti and to thank you for your support after Hurricane Matthew.
It’s been over 4 years since the devastating Hurricane Matthew struck Haiti, leaving widespread damage in the impoverished nation. The hurricane nearly or completely destroyed around 200,000 homes, leaving 1.4 million people in need and without a source of food and limited clean water.
While we remember the day like it was yesterday and reflect on the time that has passed, we find ourselves now responding to a crisis of civil unrest that has been wreaking havoc across the country for months.
Hundreds of thousands of Haitians have taken to the streets to protest the crippling devaluation of local currency, high inflation of 20 percent, and the alleged misuse of billions of dollars—on top of the decades of struggle for such basic human rights as access to food, water, education, and health care.
This is a tense and unpredictable situation that shifts between calm and violence, including shootings. Food and fuel shortages, roadblocks, and demonstrations affect all Haitians. And near our health facilities, they threaten our teams and the people we serve.
Similar to the time following the hurricane, the Partners In Health team is displaying extraordinary courage and incredible dedication amidst the strife—even over concerns for their personal safety.
With gas stations running dry, grocery shelves emptied, banks closed, and health facilities shuttered throughout the country, our dedicated staff has been finding ways to get to work and to keep all 11 of our clinic/hospital locations open and operating.
This is a testament to the commitment of our people and the power of our local presence. Ninety-nine percent of our staff is Haitian and lives in the same communities as the patients and families we serve.
But as I said, it is a dangerous time. We thank you for your help to give our staff in Haiti everything they need as they fight to save lives.
