Pigs for Prosperity: Empower 40 Widows and Orphans

1. Introduction

Kassanda Children’s Aid initiated the Pigs for Prosperity project to improve the livelihoods of 40 vulnerable households headed by widows and orphans in Kassanda District, Uganda. The project provides pigs as a sustainable income-generating asset aimed at improving household welfare, education access, and healthcare support.

The organization also operates a school serving children from the most vulnerable families in the community, many of whom previously had no access to formal education due to extreme poverty.

2. Objectives of the Project

• To empower 40 widows and orphan-led households with income-generating livestock (pigs)
• To improve household income and food security
• To support access to education, scholastic materials, and healthcare for vulnerable children
• To promote self-reliance and long-term sustainability among families

3. Project Implementation

Each selected beneficiary received:

• One or more pigs for rearing
• Training in piggery management
• Continuous monitoring and mentorship

Beneficiaries are encouraged to pass on piglets to other vulnerable households, ensuring the project continues to expand its impact within the community.

4. Key Achievements Livelihood Support

• 40 households received pigs and training in piggery management
• Beneficiaries are generating income through the sale of piglets and pig products
• Improved household access to food, education, clothing, and healthcare
• Strengthened resilience and self-reliance among participating families

Education Component

• The school currently serves 202 children
• These learners are among the most vulnerable in Kassanda District
• All children received scholastic materials at the start of the term

5. Partnerships and Education Support

We acknowledge the generous support of Lumens Volunteers, who donated scholastic materials to our school, benefiting all enrolled children.

They also introduced a Penpal Program with Seed Junior School, which has created meaningful connections and opened opportunities for sponsorship for some learners.

In addition, Lumens Volunteers facilitate online engagement sessions via Zoom between the two schools. These sessions cover topics such as education, health, leadership, and life skills, providing valuable exposure and learning opportunities for the children.

6. Challenges

• Limited access to clean water at the school
• Rising fuel costs affecting operations
• Limited veterinary services in some communities
• High cost of pig feed
• Occasional livestock disease outbreaks

7. Success Story

One of the most inspiring beneficiaries is Babirye, a single mother to Allan.

Before joining the project, Babirye struggled to meet basic needs for her son, including scholastic materials, clothing, and medical care. Life was marked by financial hardship and uncertainty.

After receiving a pig through the Pigs for Prosperity project, her situation began to change. Through pig rearing and the sale of piglets, she started generating income.

Today, she is able to:

• Provide scholastic materials for Allan
• Buy clothing for her child
• Pay medical bills when needed

She expresses deep gratitude, noting that the project has restored her dignity, hope, and ability to care for her family as a single mother.

8. Conclusion

The Pigs for Prosperity project continues to demonstrate strong impact in improving the livelihoods of vulnerable households in Kassanda District. By combining income generation with education support, the initiative is helping break the cycle of poverty and creating long-term opportunities for children and families.

Continued support will allow this model to expand and reach even more vulnerable households in need.
