Summary

Pitch In For Baseball & Softball (PIFBS) reduces barriers to play and promotes youth development by donating baseball/softball equipment in underserved communities. In times of tragedy, children are the most affected. Baseball and softball can help to restore a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos. This projects seeks to raise funds to help PIFBS build reserves of equipment to increase organizational efficiency in response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Idalia and the Maui wildfires.

Challenge

According to the NOAA, from 2020 to 2023, there have been 20+ natural disasters annually across the U.S. with damages totaling over $1 billion. Countless families have been thrown into a state of uncertainty. Amongst the most affected are the children that have lost everything they have known and loved. While meeting their basic needs is critical, it is often forgotten these kids can also use opportunities to temporarily escape their hardships through outlets such as baseball and softball.

Solution

Since 2005, Pitch In For Baseball & Softball's Disaster Relief Program has helped more than 30,000 kids impacted by a natural disaster get back on the field and start their seasons on time. While parents are focused on making sure that their family's basic needs are met, their children's activities often get lost in the mix. This fund will enable PIFBS to more proactively respond to requests for equipment from communities affected by a natural disaster and help these kids play ball again.

Long-Term Impact

In helping children get back on the field following a natural disaster, we are helping them to cope with the loss and devastation by providing them with an opportunity to just be kids and play. Children in these areas now have lives filled with uncertainty. They have been displaced from their homes and lost much of what they love. PIFBS believes that play is important, especially in times of tragedy and are grateful for the opportunity to help kids get back on the field.
