In late summer 2017, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria tore through the southeast U.S. and Caribbean, leaving in their wakes destruction and heartbreak, flooded homes and millions of displaced people. We have spent the past few months working with our partners to identify groups in need of equipment. Through our partnership with Little League, we know this:
- there are at least 42 leagues in Houston and Florida with significant equipment losses
- In Puerto Rico, there are 120 leagues and 10,000 kids in Puerto Rico without the proper equipment to play. Now as the island is slowly coming back to life, there is great interest in trying to get kids back on the field as soon as is possible.
PIFB is committed to helping each and everyone of those children to get back on the field.
Though the road to recovery is long, we know here at PIFB that baseball and softball have healing powers for kids, parents, and coaches alike in the aftermath of tragedy. Sports can help to restore a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos.
We anticipate that through mid-January, we will be continuing to work with MLB and Little League to identify groups in need and to understand their specific equipment needs better.
