Giving Women the Tools to Build the Future with AI
When Vina Alpiani wrote her first line of code, it felt like recalling a long-lost memory. A decade had passed since her first-semester coding class, and she had forgotten almost all of it. But this time, with beginner-friendly lessons from Perempuan Inovasi, it clicked. "One step at a time," she posted on LinkedIn, before moving on to the next module.
Vina is one of more than 10,000 women who have joined Perempuan Inovasi GENerasi AI, a free scholarship program from Markoding and IBM SkillsBuild. Its aim is simple: no woman in Indonesia should be shut out of the AI economy because of where she lives or what she studied.
What changed this period
Between May and June 2026, the program moved from sign-ups into live learning.
What learners tell us
"I learned that building AI is not as difficult as imagined," said one participant, who built a chatbot and turned it into a website with three lines of code. Another, from a non-IT background, now has "a greater appreciation for technical teams" after turning plain text into a real web page.
In our survey, learners rated the program 4.58 out of 5. 81% would definitely recommend it, and 65% want to come back as community drivers to help other women.
What we're still learning
We want to be honest about what needs work. Beginners found the pace hard, and attendance dropped as the classes got more technical. Most of our learners (85%) are in Western Indonesia, and we want to reach more women in the east. Many strong learners could not get a place in the next stage, the Bootcamp.
