Afghan Mateen, 35, left the country of his birth and moved into obscurity with his family. Mateen, his wife and his five children came to Türkiye from Afghanistan owing to the threat of the Taliban. The family made an agreement with a smuggler and entered Iran first and then Türkiye. While trying to cross from Iran to Türkiye, they were subjected to physical violence by smugglers and their money was stolen.
Mateen’s wife Wahida, 31, was injured during an explosion in Afghanistan during pregnancy with her first child, and her child suffered physical disability as a result of this explosion. Her child has a congenital brain tumor, cannot walk, cannot speak, and has not received any treatment before. Wahida, on the other hand, has a uterine disease and has not been treated.
The family waited for about 10 months in Türkiye to access the registration, but could not get positive results. They were caught by Turkish law enforcement officers while trying to cross into Greece illegally due to their inability to access registration in Türkiye, limited access to rights and services, and financial problems. Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (ASAM) staff contacted the family, whose contact number was obtained during the interpretation support provided during their procedures at law enforcement, and the family's vulnerability was determined and the case management process was initiated.
The family was informed about ASAM’s services, and various consultancy services were provided on international protection, application and identification processes, administrative obligations, address verification and road permit procedures, emergency health services and administrative decisions. Family members accessed the registration within this process. Two children attended the school and the treatment process for her 10-year-old son, Khalil, has started and is still continuing. Also, ASAM continues to provide necessary consultancy on other issues they need during their hospital processes.
