Hasan’s life in Aleppo, Syria, changed dramatically when his children, Abdullah and Salim, were born with hearing impairments. During a time when access to healthcare had become nearly impossible under the shadow of war, he moved to Türkiye with his family.
Coming to Türkiye legally with his wife and children in early 2014, Hasan settled in Hatay. Although they were affected by the Pazarck earthquake in 2023, their house suffered minor damage and the family continued to live in the same household. Hasan, a father of five, tries to make a living by collecting waste paper.
Hasan states that his three school-age children attend school regularly, and he makes great efforts not to disrupt the treatment of Abdullah and Salim, who have hearing impairments. The children underwent surgery and began using cochlear implants. However, the batteries and equipment for the devices need to be replaced regularly each year. Due to the high cost of these medical products, Hasan has been unable to meet these needs and has applied to the Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization(ASAM) office for support.
The children were provided with the necessary medical supplies as a result of the evaluations. Thanks to this support, Abdullah and Salim can now hear better, participate in lessons more actively and go to school more willingly. Hasan states that they attach great importance to the education and development of their children, and therefore seek support. Hasan, who said, “It makes me very happy that my children hear me and respond,” stated that their success in school has also increased considerably.
This effort by the family and the support provided by ASAM have an important place in children's access to their rights to education and health.
