The Silent Cry of Jana

By ASAM | Project Leader

Jana is a young woman and mother of three…When she left war-torn Aleppo with her husband and children to Türkiye in 2019, there was a small sprout of hope deep in her heart. Perhaps she could build a peaceful life in this new land.

However, life did not smile upon her right away. The marriage she entered into when she was only eighteen had carried the shadow of violence from the very beginning. Although her union was legally formalized in Türkiye, as soon as the doors of the house closed, the same pain began again. In the fights that took place before her children’s eyes, every scream pierced her heart like a knife. She remained silent to protect them… until one day the burden of her silence became too heavy to bear.

One day, when a fight spilled out into the street, neighbors called the police to the scene, and that's when something sparked inside Jana.  Although she didn't yet have the strength to file a complaint, she made a decision that day: She wasn't going to live like this.

She filed for divorce, but this new journey wasn't easy either; her husband took the children and moved to another city.  Although Jana was left alone, she didn't lose hope. She found a job and moved into her own apartment with the advance payment she received from her employer. She received support from Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization(ASAM) through one of her friends.

After completing the religious and official divorce procedures, she can now live in a peaceful home with her children. Her ex-husband is not paying the court-ordered alimony, but for Jana, this is no longer an obstacle. She works in a chandelier shop, and the lights in her house are kept on by her own labor. Her children are going to school, growing up, laughing… Their laughter is Jana's greatest triumph.

Jana’s story is not just her own; it is the story of all women who turn their silent screams into strength and rise again from the ruins."
