For 73 days, second-year high school students from the El Mozote School conducted an experiment to find a simple and low-cost alternative to a problem that damages chili peppers and can cause losses for farming families.
The students used eggshells, which contain calcium, and mixed them with vinegar to prepare a liquid solution. They then compared this method with the traditional use of ground eggshells applied directly to the soil. The plants that received the liquid solution developed an average of 12.5 grams of roots per plant and also produced more fruit.
Learning by doing
Beyond the results, the experiment allowed the students to learn how to observe a problem, test a possible solution, and learn from what happens in the field. They also discovered the importance of maintaining consistent irrigation. This experience showed them that it will be important to have better irrigation systems and protected areas where they can better control the conditions of their crops.
Thank you for your support!
Your donation helps many rural schools with limited resources to develop projects. Your support opens opportunities for young people to learn, research, and find solutions to problems within their own community.
The eggshells were the starting point. The most important outcome, however, is the students who now know that their questions have value and that they, too, can seek answers. Thank you for believing in them, for supporting their education, and for making it possible for them to continue learning through experience.
