BARC currently transports at least 100 dogs and cats per year to rescue groups, foster families, and forever homes. The dogs and cats must be transported from a fairly rural area. Volunteers are currently using their own vehicles which are not always optimal for safe transport. For this reason, BARC seeks a transport van to "pedal" our dogs and cats to rescues, fosters, and adopters safely.
Parsons, Kansas and the surrounding county-wide area has a problem with many abandoned and neglected dogs and cats. In 2018, BARC helped approximately 150 dogs and cats, mainly those picked up by the local Animal Control and not owner- claimed. Since there is a shortage of available homes for these animals in the surrounding area, and BARC does not have its own shelter, BARC must relocate adoptable dogs and cats outside of Parsons, after they have been spay/neutered and vaccinated.
A transport van will assist BARC with safely transporting the dogs and cats it helps to larger rescue groups, adopters, and foster homes in more urban areas. To date, BARC volunteers have driven its animals as far as 1200 to 1800 miles round trip to make sure they find forever homes. Not all of our volunteers have vehicles safe for this purpose. In addition, a transport van will help us to perform rescues involving multiple animals in one location.
In 2018, BARC transported at least 100 dogs to external rescue groups and foster homes. A transport van will help BARC move an estimated 150 animals per year, and assuming we can drive the van for 10 years, the impact will be that we can move 1500 animals closer to their forever homes. The impact to the local community is that there will be fewer homeless animals living on the streets and perhaps causing problems for pet owners and those who do not own pets.
