The last few months have been filled with preparations for the big youth conference, PeaceJam 2019! The organizing team met with Peace Prize Winner and Former President of Timor-Leste, Jose Ramos-Horta, who will be attending the conference. We have also been doing lots of fundriasing, and Canada Fund for Local Initatives has come on board with the majority of funding for the event and PeaceJam programming. However, we could use another $500 for additional conference supplies and stipends to get youth from remote areas to be able to participate, so share the opportunity to support this amazing event with your friends!
With less than three weeks away, PeaceJam preparations are speeding up. Over ten different schools/organizations will be participating in this year's PeaceJam Conference. During the conference, students will gain skills that will help them become Peace Builders and Change Makers in their community. This year's theme is works around recognizing the past (as Timor-Leste is celebrating 20 years since the referendum), and looking into the future and how women, LGBTQI+, people living with disabilities should be included in building this young nation.
In preparation for the conference, over 200 students from across Timor-Leste are learning about Nobel Peace Prize winners through PeaceJam's LEADERS curriculum. In addition with this curriculum, Ba Futuru has organized Conflict-Resolution activities to accompany the learning process. The two-day conference kicks off on Saturday, November 9th - where participants will be able to take part in workshops offered by Ba Futuru, Marie Stopes, Blue Ventures, and many more. Through these workshops, youth will build valuable skills through hands-on activities. The second day, students will put their newly gained skills to test by organizing service learning projects, that include, but are not limited to, a beach clean up, painting a mural for peace, and community health education sessions.
