Isaac is a 17-year-old survivor of the prolonged civil war and conflict in Northern Uganda, now living in Lira Town. His childhood was shaped by poverty, domestic violence, and family separation, which forced him to drop out of school at a young age. After his family lost the temporary shelter they had relied on for several years due to the war, Isaac has been living on the street with no access to his family, regular meals, medical care and moving from one friend's house to another for the past five months, never certain where he will spend the night.
Despite this instability, Isaac is now surviving with support from PCAU, having been enrolled in Technical Education and Vocational Training under the organization's Empower People and Communities Project for one year. He is currently completing a one-year Automotive Mechanics course at Bernard Training Institute. During a recent visit by PCAU team, Isaac was found actively engaged in his practical training and had received a set of tools to support his learning. His trainer describes him as disciplined, committed, and eager to learn, and Isaac speaks with excitement about the different types of motorcycles he's learning to repair.
Under PCAU's Empower People and Communities Project, Isaac is assured of full support to accomplish his training. What is not yet covered, however, is his need for a place to call home. PCAU is seeking support to help Isaac and his mother find safe, stable housing a step that would ease the daily uncertainty he faces and allow him to focus fully on completing his course.
Looking ahead, Isaac hopes to open his own motorcycle repair business after graduation and use what he has learned to earn a living and mentor other young people facing the struggles he has overcome. Stories like Isaac's reflect PCAU's ongoing work to pair vocational training with the stability young people need to complete it, and we are very grateful to our GlobalGiving donors whose continued support keeps young people like Isaac on the path toward self-reliance.
