“My dream is to wear a secondary school uniform and learn how to play the piano in church,” a fithteen years old (JK), reveals. He scored 19 aggregates in his Primary Leaving Examinations and was excited to join secondary school. He however started feeling pain in his knee and later found out he had osteosarcoma (cancer of the bones).
JK lives with his parents in Buwama town approximately 71.7KM from Kampala, Uganda' Capital. In order to reach his home, one has to cross a river, which had burst its banks. The journey takes almost 2 hours on road, ten minutes on the boat and fifteen minutes by a boda-boda (motorcycle) to reach the destination. One of our Palliative Care nurse with Hospice Africa Uganda, made a home visit to JK.
Hospice Africa Uganda plays a vital role in supporting patients and their families, addressing not just medical needs but also emotional and social ones. It's touching to see how JK's mother shares in his pain, highlighting the deep bond within families facing such challenges. The decision of JK's sibling to stay home rather than attend school reflects the profound impact of illness on family dynamics and priorities. This kind of support network is essential in helping families navigate these difficult times.
Hospice Africa Uganda is truly grateful for all donations from GlobalGiving.
