Bringing palliative care closer to communities

Greetings from Hospice Africa Uganda. This is a brief progress report on HAU highlighting achievements in this quarter April to June 2022.. 

In this quarter, we had 287 new patients. About 20% of the new patients were identified in the community while the remaining 80% were referred to HAU from the hospitals. In the same quarter, we had 887 patient encounters on home based care, hospital visits and community outreach clinics. This is an increase of 26% from 706 patient encounters realised in the previous quarter.

Our site in Hoima district, Little Hospice Hoima, commenced a new community clinic or outreach at Kakumiro Health Centre IV in Kakumiro district. The District Health Officer (DHO), Assistant DHO in charge of Health Education, District Surveillance officer and the District Village Health Team Coordinator were very supportive. The Kakumiro District Health Team run radio programmes among other activities to create awareness about the outreach.

We also had a training for the community resource persons that we call Community Volunteer Workers. These people help to identify patients in need of Palliative Care and they link them to Hospice Africa Uganda community clinics or outreaches.
