Since April 15th, the war in Sudan has claimed thousands of lives and millions of women and girls are at immediate risk of sexual violence, as their bodies are being used as a war tactic. Millions have been displaced from their homes and many struggle to meet basic needs. Running water, electricity, and medical services/products are often unavailable. Sudan is not receiving sufficient resources to confront this crisis. In this context, menstrual hygiene products are nearly impossible to come by
This situation of utter scarcity of menstrual products, adds to the high levels of risk Sudanese women and girls are facing and raises their likelihood of developing infections, which are more likely to become life threatening given the lack of access to clean water and medical services. Access to these products is a matter of dignity and safety for the women and girls of Sudan.
Women and girls need access to menstrual hygiene kits as a matter of dignity and to ensure that menstruation does not become a life-threatening condition. These kits will include underwear and disposable menstrual products as reusable menstrual hygiene products cannot be safely used in Sudan now because most people do not have regular access to clean water and soap.
Providing women and girls with the means to address their menstrual health in a safe manner during the war, will reduce likelihood of infections, which can become recurrent and impact long-term reproductive health. Moreover, this support will enable women and girls to move freely, access opportunities of education and employment, and avoid the stigma and shame around menstruation.
