Summary

This project aims to address critical issues of rampant teenage pregnancy and menstrual hygiene in the marginalized areas of Nyamira, Kenya. This multifaceted initiative combines mentorship for girls and boys, awareness campaigns for perpetrators, workshops for parents, and the distribution of sanitary towels to empower teenage girls. Challenge

Lack of access to proper menstrual hygiene products leads the girls to be vulnerable to sexual perpetrators, mainly motorcycle riders, resulting in early teenage pregnancies. 65% of women and girls in Kenya cannot afford pads due to their high cost, and 30%-40% of girls in Kenya report missing school during their menses because they lack pads where Nyamira County is not an exception. Teenage pregnancy rates are alarmingly high in Nyamira County due to lack of mentorship and accountability.

Solution

The project's solution involves a comprehensive approach to tackle both teenage pregnancy and menstrual hygiene challenges, including: Educational Workshops, Establishing a sustainable system for the regular distribution of sanitary towels to teenage girls, Awareness Campaigns to the perpetrators, seminars to law enforcement officers, health providers, and chiefs and sub-chiefs, on how to hold the perpetrators accountable, and how to provide client centered services to girls and women.

Long-Term Impact

There will be reduced teenage pregnancy rates and improved menstrual hygiene, enabling girls to stay in school without interruption, which will foster a healthier, more dignified lifestyle. Girls will be empowered to make informed choices about their bodies, relationships, and future plans. By involving parents, community leaders, and stakeholders, the project will foster a supportive environment, which will contribute to girls' higher educational attainment and broader life opportunities.
