Pads and Books

We would like to thank all the donors who have given and supported the Pads and Books project so far.

In this last quarter together with one of our partners; Through Our Voices, we have identified 2 communities to work with on this project namely; Koch Goma and Purungo. Selecting the rural communities for this years’ project has been one of kind. These communities exhibit the highest girl child school dropout rate in Nwoya District, Northern Uganda because of the stigma around menstruation and the inability to afford period materials. 

Over 50% of the school going girls in these communities miss up to 8 learning days a term or more whenever they get into their menstrual periods. In a year having 220 learning days on average, missing 24 learning days translates into 11% of the time the girl pupil misses due to menstruation hence affecting their overall class performance and school attendance. The stigma attached to menstruation or the inability to afford menstrual materials stops girls from going to school, putting them more at risk of entering child marriages, experiencing an early pregnancy and pregnancy complications, malnourishment, domestic violence and hence limiting the extent and ways in which they can participate in the public sphere. It is because of this that we selected the above communities to be part of our project.
