In our pursuit to identify two more rural communities in Nwoya district, it has been clear to see that the problem of poor menstrual hygiene management has been exacerbated by the country lockdown in effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. Access to menstrual materials has been cut short exposing young girls to early marriages, early pregnancies and hence robbing them of their childhood, dreams and hopes to complete their education.
A report by NTV news on the 13th of June, 2021 showed that over 17,000 girls in Northern Uganda became child mothers as a result of young boys and men that roamed backwaters in search of school-going girls within the lockdown. With this in play, we went ahead to identify a rural community in Northern Uganda called Omuru in Nwoya District. This community has reported a high number of girl child school drop-outs because of menstruation and early pregnancies with over 50% of their school going girls between the classes of primary four and seven missing school.
In retrospect, we have added Omuru to our list of communities that we will be working with on this project.
