Our Caregivers Are Our Heroes

It’s my pleasure to share an update on how your contributions are impacting life here at Casa Hogar in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, which is currently home to 24 full-time residents between the ages of 6 and 17.

Hooping It Up In An Indoor Gym

During a “rain day” school cancellation in September we brought all the residents to a new nearby facility, Cabo Basketball.  This is our city´s first fully indoor basketball court with hardwood flooring.  Coach Arki put our kids and staff through some drills followed by some scrimmage games. 

Inline Hockey Continues

Ten of our residents participated in a local inline hockey tournament this fall.  For some it was the opportunity to showcase their talent and progress and for others the chance to try something new.  It was a lot of fun.   Our Casa Hogar youth team managed to capture third place in their category.  

Back to the Rancho

We wrapped up October in the best possible way with a field trip back to Rancho Ecologico, El Refugio.  It’s about a two-hour bus ride but well worth the journey.   There the kids and teens spent the day splashing in the water, exploring the canyon and eating homemade tacos.  As is our tradition at this time of the year, we held a baptism service where 11 youths and 2 adults were baptized.   It was a beautiful and heartwarming day.  

Visit From a Local High School

We kicked off November with a lively visit from thirty students from a local high school. They spent Saturday morning playing soccer, doing art projects, sharing breakfast, dancing, and making music with our residents. The energy was contagious! It was a mutually enriching exchange that helped our kids connect with other young people in the community.  Moments like these — full of belonging and fun — are possible thanks to your support.

Beach Outing

We wrapped up November with a joyful trip to La Empacadora Beach — a local favorite with deep Cabo history, once home to the community's first fish cannery. Our residents had a blast running in the sand, swimming in the calm water, and simply being kids. These simple moments of freedom and laughter are part of the high-quality care your support sustains.

Buen Viaje: A Bittersweet Farewell

One of the most meaningful aspects of Casa Hogar’s mission is helping children prepare for successful reintegration into a family setting. While goodbyes are never easy, they are a testament to growth, healing, and hope.

This month, we bid farewell to two female residents (sisters). To celebrate their transition, the Casa Hogar family came together for a special meal followed by a girls' movie night. The laughter, hugs, and candid moments captured that evening speak volumes about the bonds formed here — bonds that feel like family.

Fishing Camp: From Shore to Deep Sea

Over spring break, 14 of our teens had the adventure of a lifetime at a three-day Fishing Camp, thanks to the International Game Fish Association and Pisces Sportfishing.

With conservation education, shore fishing, and deep-sea excursions, the experience pushed some of our teens out of their comfort zones — slimy scales, early mornings, and rocky waves included! But the excitement was contagious. Not only did many of them reel in their very first catches, they were also gifted with new fishing gear, including rods and clothing. Their smiles said it all.

(And yes — some of us were happy to stay safely on dry land!)

Children’s Day Joy

Our Children’s Day celebration was a blast — complete with an inflatable castle, carnival games, special treats, music, dancing, and prizes. The laughter and joy of our little ones reminded us all of the importance of creating playful, joy-filled memories.

Fire Department Training

Our ongoing collaboration with the local fire department continued this month with two full days of training. Sessions included first aid, CPR, and building evacuation — important, empowering knowledge for our staff and residents alike. We deeply value this relationship and the dedication of these community heroes.

What To Do With So Many Teeth?

There’s always a lot of curiosity around our kids’ dental health — and with good reason! Cavities, gum infections, grinding, misalignments, and chipped teeth are common challenges, especially since many of our residents have never visited a dentist before arriving at Casa Hogar.

Our first step is always education: teaching basic dental hygiene and creating healthy habits. We then connect each child with dental professionals for an initial assessment and follow-up care — sometimes over the course of several years. Thanks to the generosity of kindhearted dental specialists, some of our residents are now proudly wearing braces and smiling brighter than ever. These partnerships are truly transformational.

Mexico’s Census Increases by Two

For two brothers, June brought more than just summer sunshine — it brought the life-changing gift of legal identity. After nearly 18 months in our care and following a long process that included locating their biological mother, conducting DNA testing, and working closely with the local Child Protection Agency, the boys were officially registered with Mexico’s Civil Registry. They now have birth certificates — opening the door to education, health care, and recognition of their fundamental rights. To celebrate this major milestone, we hosted a special ceremony at Casa Hogar in their honor — a moving reminder that every child deserves to be seen, known, and valued.
