Educate and teach children in Zambia to read

In November 2014 ProjectEDUCATE begun implementing its literacy initiative desigmed to teach school going children to read and help improve access to books in schools. The project was initiated against a background of poor educational standards and infrastructure which means schools are incapable of providing adequate education. Limited funding to the educational sector means schools lack educational basics like books which are crucial to both the teaching and learning processes.

Since inception, the focus has been bringing together relevant stakeholders to provide implementation support which included program design. This has included the District Education Board Secretary's office which has welcomed the project. A total of 250 students have been selected for the project. These are low performing students reading a grade or two below their own. Literacy instruction is scheduled to commence on Monday March 3 2014. The initial target was for 3 schools however the project has an additional 52 schools that have expressed interest as well as an orphanage and a youth group. Currently the focus remains on the three initial schools as we explore possibilities of including other schools in subsequent phases.
