As the seasons shift across the sacred plains of Vrindavan and Radhakund, life within our ashrams continues to move to a rhythm of quiet resilience, deep devotion, and profound community bonds. This past quarter has been one of deep emotional milestones—marked by the warmth of new beginnings, the pain of a heartbreaking loss, and our unwavering commitment to the safety and dignity of the elderly mothers who call our ashrams home.
Strengthening Our Foundation: Infrastructure for Safety and Hygiene
Caring for ageing mothers requires a space that is as safe as it is nurturing. To ensure the highest standards of hygiene and physical security across our ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund, we are pressing forward with critical infrastructure upgrades.
We are actively working on modernizing our sanitation and bathing facilities with anti-slip flooring and accessible walk-in showers to prevent accidental falls. Our medical and first-aid rooms are being upgraded to include reliable emergency response setups and proper medical storage. Furthermore, we are improving ventilation systems and weather-proof insulation to shield the mothers from harsh seasonal extremes, alongside upgrading our kitchen and dining spaces to ensure food hygiene.
The Colors of Joy: Celebrating Janmashtami and Breaking Stigma
With the festive season upon us, the air in the ashram has a palpable exceitement building with temple bells and devotional songs. For Janmashtami, the mothers received their very first festival sarees—a simple gift, a reminder of care and thought. Watching their faces light up as they draped themselves in a new saree was a powerful reminder of what truly matters "respect". They eageryly await Diwali (The festival of Lights) and Durga Puja .
For many of these women, wearing new clothes on such a joyous occasion stands worlds away from the shadowed days of loss and the heavy, unjust societal stigmas that dictate widows must remain sidelined from celebration. Here, they are not widows defined by grief; they are beloved mothers celebrating Krishna's birth with full hearts, laughter, and a renewed sense of belonging.
In Loving Memory: Bidding Farewell to Shobha Dasi
Yet, even as we celebrate life, our hearts carry a heavy sorrow. We lost one of our brightest lights—Shobha Dasi a couple of weeks ago. Shobha was the very heartbeat of the ashram, a soul whose laughter was infectious and whose spirit was indomitable. Whether she was joyfully dancing as Radha, striking up lively conversations with visitors, or quietly teaching everyone around her the power of relentless positivity, she left an indelible mark on everyone she met.
After suffering a brain stroke, she fought a remarkably brave battle, surrounded by the best medical care possible. When her time came, she was given a farewell that befitted her radiant spirit—not by customary silence, but by the community she loved so dearly. In a poignant testament to the changing times and the quiet revolution of dignity taking root among our women, it was the mothers themselves who carried her arthi (bier) on their shoulders, and it was a woman who lit her funeral pyre. Shobha left us, but her spirit of empowerment and joy remains woven into the very being of the ashram.
Embracing the Chill: Winter Preparations and Mindful Nutrition
As the autumn breeze begins to hint at the colder months ahead, our team has already started preparing for winter supplies to keep every mother warm and snug. Our preparations include organizing full winter wardrobes: thermal uppers and lowers, soft cardigans, warm shawls, heavy blankets, woolen caps, cozy socks, and gloves.
Alongside keeping them warm, we keep a watchful, loving eye on their plates. Aging bodies require thoughtful nourishment. Our kitchen prepares balanced meals rich in wholesome proteins and complex carbohydrates to sustain their daily energy. At the same time, we carefully tailor every diet—ensuring that mothers managing diabetes are served low-sugar options, and those with blood pressure concerns receive carefully monitored, low-sodium meals.
None of this would be possible without the steadfast support of GlobalGiving friends and well wishers who believe in Maitri and hold us in their minds and prayers. Thank you for walking this journey with us, supporting us and for ensuring that these mothers live their golden years wrapped in safety, respect, and unconditional love with dignity. YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
