A Pilgrimage of Grace and Discovery: Compassion, Gratitude, and Joy
Executive Summary
Maitri is profoundly honored to share a transformative milestone that has deeply touched the lives of our mothers. In January 2026, a group of over 50 elderly abandoned mothers—many of whom have spent years navigating the quiet, painful shadows of abandonment, living At MaitriGhar, Vrindavan, embarked on a soul-stirring pilgrimage to Jagannath Puri and Konark in Odisha.
This journey was far more than a recreational trip; it was a profound reclamation of life, joy, dignity, and spiritual fulfillment. For women who once believed their world had permanently narrowed to the walls of an ashram, this pilgrimage became a testament to the power of collective compassion and the beautiful, enduring lessons of shared humanity.
The Journey: Tracks of Lifelong Connection
The transformative power of this experience began long before the group reached the shores of Odisha. For these 50+ mothers, the train journey from New Delhi to Bhubaneswar was an invigorating, joyous return to the wider world. The palpable excitement, the planning of something as small as carrying some favourite snack to eat on the way and share with other mothers and other unknown pilgrims, could be felt in the air.
A Moving Community:
The train compartments quickly transformed into vibrant spaces filled with shared laughter, warmth, and nostalgia, getting to know others travelling on a pilgrimage as well.
Forging Lifelong Bonds:
The journey beautifully illustrated the power of sharing and caring. Mothers like Saraswati and Dulari, who originally found solace at Maitri through shared histories of hardship, spent the hours exchanging life stories, comforting one another, and singing devotional hymns. The singing of hymns and the joyous laughter echoed through the train compartment.
Rising Anticipation:
The rhythmic clatter of the tracks mirrored the rising pulse of excitement. For the first time in decades, these women were looking forward to the future, traveling toward a sacred land they had only ever seen in pictures or heard of in ancient parables.
Spiritual Radiance: Divine Encounters at Jagannath Puri & Konark
The spiritual heart of the pilgrimage was the visit to the sacred Shree Jagannath Temple, a moment that epitomized the deep gratitude felt by the residents.
The Divine Encounter: As the women stood before the deities, the air was thick with pure devotion. For many, like Nanda ma—who had endured the sudden, shattering loss of her husband followed by the abandonment by a son, in whom she believed—this moment was one of profound emotional release.
A Sanctuary of Peace:
The mothers described an overwhelming feeling of "weightlessness." In the presence of the divine, the heavy burdens of their pasts—the memories of violence, hunger, and rejection—were finally offered up, replaced by a deep, enduring internal peace. Their eyes clouded by tears, their joy at coming face to face with The Deity, was a dream come true. They expressed the feeling as God revealed himself to them, and they were lost.
Marveling at Cultural Heritage: The journey continued to the majestic Sun Temple at Konark. Gazing at the intricate stone carvings, the mothers marveled at the architectural wonder, feeling a profound sense of pride and inclusion in a rich cultural heritage they were finally experiencing firsthand.
The Infinite Blue: Lessons of Hope by the Sea
Perhaps the most evocative and joyous chapter of the trip was the visit to the ocean. For the vast majority of the women, whether originally from landlocked regions like Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, or West Bengal and Assam, the sea had always been a myth. Standing on the beach, it became a breathtaking reality.
First Sight and Childlike Joy:
Approaching the shore, the sheer expanse of the horizon brought many to a sudden, awestruck standstill. In a beautiful display of the joy of giving, the mothers shed their years, their sorrows, and their anxieties, wading into the surf with pure, childlike abandonment. Their laughter rose high above the sound of the crashing waves. They were shy like children when the staff wanted to capture their joy and laughter for the camera.
The Lesson of the Horizon: The ocean taught everyone a powerful lesson about resilience and fresh starts. Watching the infinite horizon, one mother beautifully noted that the sea reminded her that life’s capacity for renewal is boundless—no matter how late in life it arrives. "For the first time in my life, life does not feel like a struggle. And that is enough." — Nanda Ma
