High unemployment and soaring local food prices have compromised infant healthcare across informal displacement centers in the Afrin region. To protect young children from acute nutritional failure, BESME INSANI launched a comprehensive child nutrition intervention targeting vulnerable displaced communities. Over a dedicated field cycle, our clinical teams screened over 1,200 children and provided specialized therapeutic nutrition care to 320 malnourished infants and lactating mothers.
The project provided high-calorie, vitamin-fortified therapeutic pastes (Plumpy'Nut) along with essential micronutrient supplements to restore depleted vital nutrients in affected infants. Medical staff established routine follow-up protocols, conducting bi-weekly health checks to track MUAC score improvements and ensure full recovery before program discharge.
Field logistics were managed through mobile nutrition vans that visited remote camp blocks lacking fixed health clinics. Field officers worked alongside local community leaders to register widow-headed households and families caring for orphans with malnourished young infants requiring immediate care.
Timely therapeutic nutrition offers an irreplaceable health barrier for infants living under extreme poverty, preventing severe medical emergencies. BESME INSANI continues to monitor child health metrics closely, striving to expand specialized nutrition operations across displaced camp communities in Northwestern Syria.
