Severe economic decline and prolonged displacement across Northwestern Syria have sharply intensified malnutrition rates among vulnerable infants and young children. To address this life-threatening health crisis, BESME INSANI deployed a specialized mobile emergency nutrition project targeting displaced children in informal camp clusters near Central Idlib. During this operational cycle, our medical teams screened hundreds of children and admitted 350 severely and moderately malnourished infants into our direct nutritional support program.
Children suffering from Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) received specialized therapeutic food commodities, including Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) pastes and high-nutrient micro-micronutrient powders. Additionally, young mothers received targeted lipid-based nutrient supplements and infant feeding counseling to support healthy lactation and nutritional recovery in harsh camp environments.
Field medical units operated mobile clinics across multiple camp sectors to conduct weekly weight-for-height and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) monitoring measurements. Priority was given to newly displaced households and infants showing early signs of developmental stalling or recurring intestinal infections.
This early nutritional intervention plays a critical role in reducing child mortality, strengthening immune resilience, and preventing irreversible physical and cognitive stunting. BESME INSANI remains fully committed to securing specialized therapeutic supplies and expanding child health monitoring pipelines across Northwestern Syria to save young lives.
