Thank you for your wonderful support to Irish Hospice Foundation. As you know, ours is the only free at-home Night Nursing service for patients suffering from non-cancer diseases. That’s everything from dementia, to heart disease.

Since the pandemic began, your compassion has helped provide more precious hours of night nursing care than at any other time in our 35-year history.

Our provisional figures tell us that from January to October 2021, we have supported approximately 750 people and their families and provided 2,263 nights of care during that period.

For the first part of 2022, from the 1st of January to the 26th of January, we have seen a 38.5% increase in demand compared with the same period last year.

Your generosity helps us meet this unprecedented increase in demand and brings comfort to so many families accross Ireland...

In her own words our Nurse for Night Care, Annemarie tells us how your kindness brings such comfort and relief to dying people and their families, night after night.

“You’re there for the family as much as the patient… It’s so tiring for families. They’re exhausted. I can’t count the number of times someone has said to me, ‘I got a good night sleep for the first time in weeks because I knew my loved one was in good hands.’”

Since Annmarie began as a Nurse for Night Care at the start of the pandemic, many people who have died, and their loved ones she came to know, have all taken a special place in her heart. But she tells us of one family who she will carry with her forever. It was a mother and daughter, they were devoted to one another.

“The daughter wouldn’t leave her side in those final nights. She was sleeping on a blow-up mattress next to her Mam.”

When the mother took her final breath, Annemarie went to comfort the grief-stricken daughter.

“She’d just lost her Mam. She had nobody else. I sat in the garden with her for two hours. I think it meant the world to her that I was there.

That’s part of nursing, bringing comfort and humanity in those devastating moments.”

— Annemarie, Nurse for Night Care

This year alone we must raise nearly €1 million to meet the need for our Nurses for Night Care service. We couldn’t meet this growing demand without your support as 85% of our income comes from the voluntary donations from generous people like you. Thank you for the comfort and peace that you bring to so many families at a very difficult time

Dear friend,

Thank you for your wonderful support to Irish Hospice Foundation. As you know, ours is the only free at-home Night Nursing service for patients suffering from non-cancer diseases. That’s everything from dementia, to heart disease.

From January to September 2021, we have supported over 650 families across the country and funded 1,980 nights of nursing care.

We have seen 2021 referral figures increasing by over 20% on the same period last year. We have observed that the impact of COVID-19 has resulted in a shift towards delivery of care in the community and a significant rise in demand for Nurses for Night Care throughout the country.

Demand is growing by 15% each year. This year alone we must raise nearly €1 million to meet the need for our Nurses for Night Care service. We couldn’t meet this growing demand without your support as 85% of our income comes from the voluntary donations from generous people like you.

For people to be able to spend their final days at home, we must offer access to care and adequate healthcare services. This project contributes to this vision: enabling people to live and die at home. Not only does this project support the person being cared for, but it also provides support and respite to family members and helps them come to terms with their bereavement.

Your generosity sends nurses to the doorsteps of families at a very vulnerable time. Thank you for making final wishes come true.

Dear friend,

In the first half of 2021 and thanks to your support...we have provided 1,148 nights of nursing care across Ireland.

Irish Hospice Foundation is the only free at-home Night Nursing service for patients suffering from non-cancer diseases. That’s everything from dementia, to heart disease.

Nurses for Night Care enables people with diseases like dementia, motor neurone disease, advanced respiratory disease, heart failure and end stage kidney disease to receive expert nursing care and support at night in their own homes in their final days. It also provides reassurance and respite for families and loved ones caring for someone at home.

Demand is growing by 15% each year. This year alone we must raise nearly €1 million to meet the growing demand for our Nurses for Night Care service.

Since Coronavirus, more people want to spend their final days at home. Visiting restrictions in hospitals have led to an increase in demand for our Nurses for Night Care service. Your generosity ensures that we reach them all.

This programme wouldn't be possible without your support. 85% of our income comes from the voluntary donations from generous people like you. Thank you!

According to our provisional figures, for the period of January 2021 to May 2021 we have supported 387 families through this service and we have provided 1,148 nights of nursing care at home. Your kindness and generosity means the world to so many people across the country:

"Her calm, reassuring nature meant that our family could leave my mother's side for the night without worry. We knew she was in confident, capable hands.”

Dear friend,

Thanks to your support we provided 19,440 hours of night nursing care in 2020!

Irish Hospice Foundation is the only free at-home Night Nursing service for patients suffering from non-cancer diseases. That’s everything from dementia, to heart disease. This service provides nursing care, practical support and reassurance for the person and for their families in the last days of their life. This service is provided free of charge by Irish Hospice Foundation and was established in 2006.

Since Coronavirus, more people want to spend their final days at home. Visiting restrictions in hospitals have led to an increase in demand for our Nurses for Night Care service. Your generosity made sure we could reach them all.

FROM AOIFE, ONE OF OUR NURSES FOR NIGHT CARE:

Funded by your generosity, our Nurses for Night Care keep grateful families together until the very end.  Nurse Aoife tells how the precious moments you make possible in those final days and nights can become treasured memories…

"There are moments of pure joy, even laughter when families are all together in those final nights” says Aoife. She tells of a family who were losing their Mam…“She had eight grown-up children. They all wanted to be with her when she drew her final breath. They were around her, sharing stories and happy memories. It was so special for them all to be there around her bed, just as she would have wanted".

Last year, your gifts made moments like this possible for over 800 families in Ireland, providing a total of 2,438 nights of home care for patients at the end of their life.

“I’ve seen it,” said Nurse for Night Care, Mary. “In the hospital, people who are at the end of life are alone in the last few weeks. It’s so sad.”

And that’s why, Mary says, your generosity is such a cherished gift to terminally ill people and their families at this distressing time.

“You can see the relief in people's faces when they open the door to me. You are with families who are so desperate, so vulnerable, so isolated. They’re just so appreciative that you’re there.”

Because of you, our Nurses for Night Care have been able to reach many more people who are cocooning fragile family members in those final days and nights. This year so far we had 851 referrals to the service and have provided 1,229 nights of care across Ireland.
