The North Kensington Children's Orchestra uses music to transform the lives of over 320 children in West London. The majority of children we support come from North Kensington, a disadvantaged neighbourhood impacted by the Grenfell tragedy. We believe that all children deserve the same chance to succeed, whatever their background. That's why any child can join our project free of charge.
Teaching a youth orchestra during lockdown is challenging. With your support we can continue to provide our free programme to all 320 of our talented young musicians. We have adapted our delivery with 239 sessions a week now held online. We have also created a fun programme of challenges, performances and group activities to simulate the group playing experience of an orchestra. A fantastic team of 22 professional music teachers deliver this programme.
We will bring learning and joy during a difficult time. We know our students are appreciating the discovery that, no matter what challenges the world may bring, music is one thing that can never be cancelled. Our young musicians have worked so hard this year, with ten of our students awarded places in the Royal College of Music Junior Department. Your support will ensure that our students' incredible progress continues despite the interruption to their lives caused by Covid-19.
We teach music because we know that it has a powerful effect on a child's overall development. Access to high-quality music education is a particular issue in our community where 37% of children live in poverty. Our free project is accessible to any child aged 0-18, whatever their level of musical experience and background. Our intention is to create opportunity, break down social barriers and inspire our 320 children to fulfil their potential.
