In rural Mali, lack of blood causes preventable deaths-especially among women and children. In 12 months, this project will: Deliver 2,000 safe blood units to Yanfolila District Hospital, Ensuring free, life-saving transfusions for 1,250 patients-including 413 mothers and 375 children in urgent need. Screen 2,250 people for HIV, hepatitis B/C, syphilis Train 135 volunteer donors in blood donation and voluntarism Train 66 community nurses on anemia and national referral system.
In 2023, R.S.P.P assessed blood needs at Yanfolila Hospital and found major gaps: only 58% of requests were met. Of the 42% untreated, most had severe anemia. Many died, including four postpartum women. Others were referred to Bamako (300+ km away) or left due to lack of donors or funds. The findings highlighted an urgent need for a local, reliable blood supply system to prevent avoidable deaths and reduce delays in emergency care.
R.S.P.P initiated this project to achieve zero preventable deaths, zero emergency referrals due to blood shortages, and zero stockouts at Yanfolila District Hospital. The project will run regular blood drives, provide medical supplies for transfusion and blood screening for HIV, Hepatis B and C, Syphilis, and blood type, trains health staff, hosts health fairs during malaria season, and builds a strong network of voluntary donors to expand and sustain safe blood access in rural Mali.
It will aim to meet 100% of transfusion needs, scale donor screening, and extend infection control. The voluntary donor network will cover more communes. Medical outreach will grow, with a focus on preventing maternal and child deaths. Community awareness via media will deepen behavioral change. Training efforts will further strengthen local capacity and resilience in underserved areas, laying the groundwork for long-term health equity and self-reliance.
