For more than 16 years, conflict with Boko Haram has shattered children's futures in Nigeria: 1,400 schools destroyed, 2,300 teachers killed and 20M children now out of school, the largest number of any country. We're getting these children back into school, one child at a time, with a bundle of support that includes education kits (backpack, pens & paper), livelihoods for their caregivers so they can afford education, mental health support and new, safe school buildings with clean water.
Nigeria has the largest number of out-of-school children in the world, at 20 MILLION. Extreme poverty and an under-funded education system is compounded by ongoing violence and displacement since Boko Haram became active in 2009, especially in the country's North East region, where 72% of people can't read even after finishing elementary school.
Street Child is enrolling 3,000 children into education by the end of 2026, and addressing the main barriers to education so that they don't just drop straight back out again: 1. Education kits enable them to be part of learning. 2. Livelihoods will address parents' inability to afford education for their children. 3. Teacher training will address lost talent in the education sector. 4. School reconstruction will replace damaged or destroyed buildings.
We believe that education is not merely a fundamental human right, but also the surest pathway out of poverty. The program will enable 3,000 children affected by conflict to go back to school next semester, stay there, participate fully in class and learn to read, write and count for a brighter future. This will enable them to participate in the economy and civil society, which in turn will empower them to be independent and healthier, and educate their own children.
