Nicaragua Projekt's health care program for campesinos is expanding. When we originally trained the community health care providers, brigadistas, in 2016, the idea was to have one brigadista and one backup brigadista in each community. There would be one mini-pharmacy, botiquine, in each community. Based on our experience, we have made some adjustments. In the case of the community of Guasure, we had two excellent brigadistas covering a very large area. We decided to divide the area in two and give a second botiquine to the former backup brigadista. Julio takes his work as a brigadista very seriously and he treats over three dozen patients each month. We also have a new brigadista in Las Palmas, Carlos. He received his basic training elsewhere, but he has been an enthusiastic participant and contributor at each of the continuing education seminars since May 2018. Carlos' photo, with his freshly restocked botiquine, is above.
Each month, our doctor, Dr. Evertz Tercero, spends a half day in each community seeing patients. Sometimes he sees seventy patients in one day. In the photo below, patients are waiting to see the doctor at brigadista Julio’s house in north Guasure.
On November 7-8, 2018, Dr. Tercero taught the third quarterly two-day continuing education seminar for our brigadistas at the Vida Nueva Center in Ocotal. All the brigadistas attended. As you can see in the photo below, two of our brigadistas have young babies themselves. Our brigadistas are very committed to providing the best health care services possible, serving their communities as volunteers.
Working with the NGO Electronic Medical Records for the Developing World, EMR4DW.org, Dr. Tercero and our nurse Alba are gradually entering all of our patients into an electronic database. This will enable us to track our patients’ health much more efficiently. We are very excited about adding electronic records to the handwritten records so painstakingly kept by each brigadista for each patient she or he sees.
