Inspiring the Next Generation of Women in Tech
(Project 68793)
Slovakia
Activity: Micro:bit Workshop “Journey to Space” at the Piarist Grammar School of Jozef Branecký in Trencín, Slovakia
As part of our mission at Aj Ty v IT to make tech education accessible and inclusive for girls across Slovakia, we are preparing a workshop called Micro:bit – Journey to Space, which will take place on November 17, 2026 at the Piarist Grammar School of Jozef Branecký in Trencín. The workshop is designed for students at the level of grades 6–9 (ages approx. 11–15). Like all our SmartLab workshops, it is set up so that girls make up at least half of the participants.
The two-lesson workshop is built around the story of a space mission. In the first part, students think about the conditions humans need to survive and measure some of them using the sensors on the micro:bit. In the second part, they program their own working project that monitors the measured values and responds to them automatically, for example by raising an alarm when something is too high or too low. Our goal is to show them that programming is a tool for experimenting and solving real-world problems, not just “working on a computer.”
The €75 raised through GlobalGiving will cover the fee of an experienced instructor for leading the two-hour workshop, as well as the costs of delivering it outside Bratislava. This allows us to bring hands-on tech learning to students in the regions, where such opportunities are far less common than in the capital.
This small-scale, high-impact workshop is part of our long-term strategy to reduce the gender gap in Slovakia’s IT sector by sparking early interest and showing girls that they belong in STEM. We look forward to sharing how it went in our next update.
Thank you for helping us bring technology closer to girls in Slovakia’s regions!
