HFAW in collaboration with Jiinue Network and other women who recently participated in Global Women Leadership Network (GWLN) will raise awareness among rural and marginalized women to refuse selling their votes, avoid electing corrupt leaders, vote for more women for elective seats and choose leaders of integrity come 2017 election. We are planning an urgent 10 kilometer walk, first one in Ndia Constituency in Kirinyaga County, scheduled for October 10th, 2015.More Counties walks will follow.
Gender discrimination in elective positions in Kenya is chronic. The 2010 constitution mandates a 1/3 of each gender in our leadership but Kenya is not implementing this mandate. There is a constitutional crisis and corruption thrives in all sectors. Poverty is feminized and women are unable to be elected due to sale of votes, threats, lack of funds and skills. This leads to recycling of corrupt male dominated chauvinistic leadership who care less about the suffering to women, youth and children.
HFAW & Network will raise awareness campaigns coupled with organized peaceful educational and empowering protests. We want to change mindset among rural women marjority to know that they have power to end corruption in this country. This begins by us raising awareness that they have rights e.g. to democracy, good governance and wealth. The walk will mobilize for messaging, fundraising ksh.10M and building of critical mass. We anticipate reaching over 10000 women in our walk and through the media
Rural women will reduce ignorance, the point of their exploitation. Women & supportive men will demonstrate understanding of importance of electing leaders with integrity come 2017. Women will refuse to sell their vote and more women and leaders of integrity will be elected. This will be impetus for positive future elections, a strong catalyst for elimination of gender disparities in elective politics leading to paradigm shift in eliminating corrupion, reducing poverty and enhancing democracy.
