Health & Hope’s relief project in the border areas between India and Myanmar has been in operation for nearly 3 years and in that time, thanks to generous support, we have delivered over 62,244 grants to thousands of refugees who have fled the conflict in the months following the coup. This work has evolved to match the needs in line with available funds.
Initially, we provided emergency shelters, water and sanitation, food, health and hygiene grants and medical grants. While the need for food continues to be urgent, we have diversified our support to include livelihood development and education grants for refugee children, teachers, and schools.
Food Banks
To enable the transition from short-term relief to more sustainable initiatives, we have launched 6 Food Banks which are revolving food stores in the camps that offer food supplies at a subsidised price to refugees. This enables supplies to be extended over a longer period. Trial sites have proved very successful, and we hope to scale up to further sites in the future.
Testimonial
We can borrow food items at the beginning of the month and pay them back at the end of the month, which is very helpful because we only have money at the end of the month. We can also get the items at a lower price than other shops in the village. This helps us in many ways, such as paying my children's tuition fees and buying medicine for my family,” says Chesa, a refugee living in a camp with her husband and five children.
Latest update in Myanmar
There has been an intensification of conflict across Myanmar in recent weeks, particularly in the border areas. This has meant an increased displacement of thousands of people. We were able to respond quickly in our target areas, thanks to your generosity. Basic needs were met with food, household essentials, clothes and medical care.
The complex nature of this conflict means that we will need to continue to respond to urgent needs as they arise. Thank you for standing with us and the people of Myanmar.
