The project will benefit 200 children from 8 to 11 years old in Jujuy, a province of Argentina where 52% of the children between 15 and 17 years cannot understand properly a simple text. The program looks to increase the amount of books read by the children and to enhance their reading situations. To do so, we will distribute to the school 4 backpacks with 30 new books each. The teachers will commit to read 10 books at school along project implementation and will ask children to read 10 at home.
Since the 90s, education system in Argentina has been deteriorating, arriving today to an important crisis. Children from low-income families are at especially high risk for reading failure. This program tries to respond to the needs of a remote school named "Escuela N 54 prof. Filiberto U. Carrizo" in the south of Jujuy. The school is located in the countryside and needs books to enhance literacy development on children in a province where 25.7% of the population lives under the poverty line.
Fundacion Leer will provide the school with 4 backpacks. Each of them includes: 30 new books, 60 certificates, 60 booklets and 4 posters for the classrooms. Reading Challenge 20-20 offers schools and families a variety of devices to enhance children's literacy. As described before, children will be requested to read 20 books along the school year, 10 at school and 10 at home. They will be asked to register each book read in a booklet specially provided by Fundacion Leer.
